Some time back I showed the first of cornings videos of glass used in the future, it had massive hits and showed many ways of constructing both homes and offices, where the glass Used in may application was the access point to the owners computer, allowing complete integration between screens, and transferability between units both inside the home or office and the users car and mobile unit.

The video realised many question, such as what the operating was, but to me it raised many questions on construction, such as fitting, edge details, power supply, communications between units, weight, etc.

Then Microsoft issued a video in the same vain, where glass screens showed data, maps and it transferred to the users thin mobile phone, pretty slick. Apart from the obvious computer operation the use of thin lightweight glass was the next obvious comparison, enter stage left with gorilla glass, this product has not yet reached it full potential yet, in fact it has not even begun to show it’s true colours, (pun intended), rather it needs a technologist to start and detail with it. The science and computer guys are racing ahead with great concepts, but the obstruction and real use in Architecture needs some thought.

So what else can we expect from Corning, well the latest video, tries, and quite successfully, to expand on this technology, two versions of the film have been made, the second has a narrative added to explain some of the tech points what’s reality and what’s on the wish list.

I love this second film, because much of what’s shown could be done today, but I wish they had used a technologist in the design, and tried to answer some of the design problems, such as interface and jointing, I worked on a hospital design some years ago and have detailed many theatres and the one items common to all areas in hospital design is the jointing of materials, cleaning is paramount, so seamless materials are used where ever possible, so to have glass used a wall, the interface between the glass wall and floor needs to sorted, ok glass may well be ideal as a wall covering because it’s almost inert to germs, but the joint between panels and other materials needs to be sorted, and explained.

The third film below is the explanation video it’s not short, so be prepared to spend the time, I watched it twice so I could write this blog. It’s a great explanation and raises so many more questions, Corning are pushing the boundaries with Gorilla glass, its thin, lightweight, and open to being programmed, hence the photo at the top right, just a small chip hidden away could this do what we want, or can the chip be etched into the glass. More I want more information, the web site does not give, ok I did watch the Gorilla adverts, they are getting very cool, just love the Gorilla in the office, taking a text from his wife, “hey big boy ” excellent

Just as an ofhand entry, I wrote this on blogger, an iPad application for word press, I loaded it up as a draft and finished it og with the videos and picture on my mac, It’s the first time I have used blogger and like the look and feel, I will endeavour to use it more to do live blogs,

As for CPD, the hour I spent researching this and pulling together the videos in the right order, plus the other time spent on watching and sketching, oh yes I got out the ote pad and pulled a couple of ideas together, my mine was buzzing after all this and could not sleep. I am claiming a good 1 hour, I actually spent about three, but will only claim the minimal.
